Oostvaardersplassen, new nature below sealevel

Oostvaardersplassen Engels

This book tells you the story of the Oostvaardersplassen, a story like a fairy tale. Thirty years ago thia area was a part of the sea. After land reclamation in 1968 a big industrial area was planned between the cities of Almere and Lelystad. Due to the oil crisis of 1973 and the following economic recession no further development took place in this lowest part of the polder; nature suddenly got a chance. Nature took this opportunity and developed in it's own way. A way we didn't know anymore in modern Western Europe. What we got was a vast wilderness area as a presentation of nature to mankind. To make our society remember that nature still can exist with her own rules if there is no limit in space and time.

The results are marvellous: the Oostvaardersplassen are still a famous wetland of international importance with a lot of breeding marshbirds, migrating waders and plenty of waterfowl including rarities as Great egret, Spoonbill and Sea eagle. People can enjoy beautiful birdlife year-round on many places.

Here nature conservation got a new dimension. No longer conserving existing nature in mostly small reserves but allowing freedom to natural processes, and see what happens. From nature conservation to nature development. Since the seventies The Oostvaardersplassen is the flagship of a new direction. Many people abroad look at it and are astonished about what appeared to be possible on only an hour driving from the city of Amsterdam in such a densely populated country as the Netherlands. When this is possible here, it must be possible in many other countries in Western Europe as well.
