Spontaneous nature development
By now, the Oostvaardersplassen have demonstrated that nature of unparalleled quality can even develop in densely populated areas. The government therefore also wishes to continue to provide space to the spontaneous development of nature in the future. However it is also important for there to be space for people to enjoy nature.
Oostvaardersland
Inside the next couple of years, the surrounding nature reserves could become more closely linked to the Oostvaardersplassen by creating a robust ecological corridor (along which animals, but also plants, can travel) with the Horsterwold near Zeewolde. This will create Oostvaardersland, a 13,000 hectare nature reserve, which will emphatically also provide room for recreation. Daily practice has revealed that these corridors and recreation go well together. This not only provides more room for nature, but also for people.
Europe
A next step is a robust connection to the Veluwe and, via the Veluwe Massive, with the rest of Europe. This will enable new species of animal to find the Oostvaardersplassen.
