Staatsbosbeheer and Natura 2000

Staatsbosbeheer is pleased with Natura 2000 because it offers better guarantees and optimum management for nature sites. The safeguarding of exceptional qualities (rare species or unique environmental conditions) requires tailor-made work and that is what Natura 2000 provides. It is aligned with our task to maintain as wide a variety of ecosystems in landscapes as possible; also for future generations.

International protection

Staatsbosbeheer also sees great advantages in the international character of this network. After all, nature does not stop at the border. During a period of climate change animals and plants need the space to be able to follow the climatic conditions they require.

Groote PeelNaturally, Staatsbosbeheer is proud of the fact that the European Commission has recognised the high quality of a large number of our nature sites. Well over half of our sites are part of the network. We manage (part) of 130 of the 162 Natura 2000 sites in the Netherlands.

Cooperation

Natura 2000 is new. At the moment, a large number of people are involved in the drawing up of management plans for all 162 sites. To efficiently organise this input, Staatsbosbeheer cooperates closely with other site managing organisations such as Natuurmonumenten, the provincial Landscape authorities and partners such as Nature & the Environment, the provincial environmental federations and the Government Service for Land and Water Management (DLG).

Usage consequences

Staatsbosbeheer wants as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the exceptional Natura 2000 sites. However, the organisation critically examines the consequences for nature on site.
